Nature

The city of Cagliari is characterised by a unique natural environment, with fascinating lagoons, hills and splendid beaches.

  • The Molentargius Lagoon

  • The S. Gilla Lagoon
This lagoon abounds in fascinating bird life (over 150 species of birds).
Since the opening of the S. Gilla Lagoon towards the sea, it has become one of the water areas with the highest density of fish life in Europe.

  • Poetto Beach

The HillsMonte Urpinu

  • Monte Urpinu:
this park stretches over a hill, covered in a secular pinewood, and is situated in the centre of the city. It boasts lakes, populated by swans and ducks, and a breathtaking panorama from the top of the hill of the Molentargius Lagoon, the Salt lakes and Poetto Beach.

  • The Hill of Sant'Elia:
The Hill of Sant'Eliathis hill, with its limestone headland, divides the Golfo degli Angeli in two. It is of great natural interest because of its majestic pines, its Mediterranean scrub, characterised by lentisk and juniper trees, its splendid cliffs, small inlets and the charming beach of Calamosca.
The tourist marina of Marina Piccola lies at the foot of the towering promontory and marks the beginning of the splendid Poetto Beach.

  • The Hill of San Michele:The Hill of San Michele
this is one of the highest hills in Cagliari (120m. above sea level), with the Castle of San Michele perched on its summit. The castle was built by the Pisans in the second half of the XIII century.
The castle occupied a strategic defensive position and prevented possible enemy armies from approaching the city.
Today it has been beautifully restored and boasts a vast park which offers a splendid view of the entire city and its surroundings.

    Tuvixeddu

  • Tuvixeddu:
in the local dialect "Tuvixeddu" means "the hill with the small holes" and owes its fame to the thousands of tombs which constitute the biggest Phoenician-Punic necropolis in the Mediterranean.

  • The Hill of Bonaria:The Hill of Bonaria
this hill is situated on the outskirts of Cagliari and bears witness to a burial ground whose history can be traced from the late Roman Republican period up to recent times as the town's monumental cemetery.
