Pula
Population: 7,000
Altitude: 15m. above sea level
The town of Pula is situated along the S.S. 125 road, 29 km. south west
of Cagliari, on the west coast of the Golfo degli Angeli.
The
town has experienced rapid economic and demographic growth since 1970,
thanks to its popularity as a beach resort. Visitors are attracted by
the area's natural beauty and the excellent facilities it has to offer,
including a world class professional golf course.
Visitors should not miss the beautiful Villa of Santa Maria, built
by the architect Gaetano Cima (1830). This neo-classical villa has three
floors and inside visitors can admire many of the original furnishings.
The ancient church of Santa Maria is also of particular interest. It
was recently restructured and boasts some beautiful frescoes.
The museums are also well worth a visit. We particularly recommend:
- Il Museo Archeologico
the Archaeological Museum occupies an old, two storey house, characteristic
of the Campidano region, which has been perfectly restored.
The fascinating exhibits offer visitors an insight into the lives
of the inhabitants of Nora, throughout the various periods in history.
- Museo di Minerali e di Numismatica
the Mineral and Numismatics Museum boasts two important collections,
one of minerals and one of ancient coins.
The area around Pula is a haven for nature lovers and is rich in archaeological
sites, including the ruins of the ancient
city of Nora.
The
territory of Pula boasts an exceptional coastline, with numerous beaches
and bays, which stretch from the Baia di Nora to the splendid beach
of Santa Margherita.
Besides its beaches, the area has some marvellous woods, with rare
species of flora and fauna.
This natural environment is part of the largest "green" zone
of southern Sardinia, known as "Gutturu Mannu".
Finally, Pula offers its visitors a number of exhibitions and events
of great cultural interest:
- La Notte dei Poeti: "The Night of
the Poets" presents artists and groups of international fame,
who perform at the Roman Theatre of Nora during the summer season.
- Pula Dimensione estate:"Pula's Summer
Season" is a programme of events, including music, dancing and
various arts, which are held in the town throughout August.
- L'Artifolk: "Folk Art" is an
exhibition of Sardinian handicraft, which is held in August in the
charming setting of Casa Frau.
