Collinas
Population: 1,020
Altitude: 249m. above sea level
Collinas is situated 2.5 km. from Villanovaforru.
It was the ancient town of "Forru" and was the birthplace
of Giovanni Battista Tuveri (born in 1815), illustrious politician
and philosopher, who changed the town's name to Collinas in the
mid 1800s.
Much of the town's architecture reflects the traditional rural
style and a beautiful example of this is the Monte Granatico building
(a grain bank which was established in the Marmilla region in
the XVII century). The building has been perfectly restored to
its former glory and is now a library and ethnographic museum.
Places
to visit:
- The Parish Church of San Michele Arcangelo
This church is situated in the centre of the town and is particularly
interesting because of its seventeenth century bell tower. This
octagonal bell tower forms an elegant profile as it rises up
from a square base.
Inside the church visitors can admire the Gothic features which
remain from the original structure of the building and date
back to the end of the sixteenth century, as well as three wooden
statues from the Neapolitan School from the same period;
- The Country Church of Santa Maria Angiargia
This church is situated just a few km. from the town.
Things not to miss:
- The Nuragic Necropolis of "Sa Sedda
'e Candeba"
The necropolis lies in a zone which boasts a remarkable concentration
of Nuraghi.
The burial area is made up of two tombs situated a short distance
from each other.
Situated in the heart of the Marmilla plain, the town of Collinas
is the ideal place for visitors who are interested in archaeology
since it is within easy reach of the Nuragic sites of Barumini
and Villanovaforru.
