Quartucciu

Population: 10,500
Altitude: 12m. above sea level

Quartucciu, together with the town of Quartu S.Elena, forms a single urban centre with the city of Cagliari.
The name "Quartucciu" derives from the Roman name for the town. In fact, this town, and others, get their names from the distance they lie from the Chief Town; Quartucciu and Quartu, for example, are both four km. from Cagliari. The territory of Quartucciu, whose origins date back to the Nuragic period, abounds in fascinating testimony to its historical, artistic and cultural past.

Among the many things to see, we recommend:

  • The Giants' Tomb of "Sa Domu 'e S'Orcu" (X-VI century BC.):
this was used for religious and funeral rites by the inhabitants of the area. Today it is considered one of the most beautiful tombs from the Nuragic period in Sardinia because of its dimensions and typology.
It is immersed in a splendid natural environment and stands 350m. above sea level on the slopes of the mountain known as "Monte dei Sette Fratelli".

  • The "Nanni Arru" Nuraghe (XI century BC.):
this Nuraghe is situated at "Nanni Arru"- San Martino, near Sant'Isidoro.
The Nuraghe was discovered by chance in 1993 and, from an archaeological point of view, is considered as important as the Nuragic village of Barumini.

  • The Byzantine Tomb (VIII century AD):
this is an underground tomb consisting of a quadrangular burial chamber with a vaulted roof.
The chamber is accessible from an open corridor and a series of steps leading downwards.
The tomb is situated on a hill near Lake Simbirizzi, from which visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the Gulf of Cagliari.

  • The Roman Necropolis (II century AD.):
unlike the necropolis which can be found at Sant'Isidoro, this necropolis presents multiple tombs, inside which various burial objects have been uncovered.

  • The Byzantine Tomb of Cuccuru Linu (VI - VII century AD.):
this tomb was built entirely with square limestone blocks.

  • The Church of San Giorgio (XIV century):
the Parish Church is situated in the town centre and has a rectangular plan, with eight chapels in each part.
Near the altar there are eleven tombs, one for priests and ten for the people.

  • The Church of Sant'Efisio (XIII - XIV century):
This Church is situated inside the town cemetery and has a beautiful facade which boasts Medieval origins.
For almost all the twentieth century the church was used as the cemetery chapel, today, however, it is included in the urban area of the town and is used for regular services.

  • The Church of San Biagio:
This church was completely restored in 1988. The facade presents a small bell tower with its bell suspended from a solid wooden beam.
The church originally had one central nave, but was later enlarged to a central nave and two side aisles with curved arches.
