The Sanctuary and Basilica of our
Lady of Bonaria
Address:
Piazza Bonaria - Cagliari city
The
Sanctuary was built between 1323 and 1326 A.D. and is the earliest
example of Gothic-Catalan architecture in Sardinia. The facade
still conserves a beautiful Gothic doorway, saved from the ruins
of the church of San Francesco, whilst inside there is the legendary
sacred image of Our Lady of Bonaria.
The Museum of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Bonaria can be found
in the cloister of the convent, where visitors can admire sacred
objects and works of art, among which many votive offerings. Another
fascinating exhibit is the casket which, according to tradition,
carried the sacred image of the Madonna to Cagliari
in 1370.
Beside the Sanctuary stands the monumental Basilica, designed
by De Vincenti (XVIII century) and later modified by Viana, work
which was not finished until 1952.
Another place of interest is the Cimitero Monumentale (Monumental
Cemetery), which is situated on the side of the hill where the
Bonaria neighbourhood stands.
