Cities and Towns of the Marmilla
The Marmilla district is a very popular choice for tourists because
it abounds in archaeological and natural wonders.
The Marmilla district also boasts a number of fascinating towns and
villages where visitors can an insight into the real Sardinia, its traditions,
customs and history. We particularly recommend the following:
- Villanovaforru
The town is of great archaeological interest because of the Nuragic
Village of Genna Maria and the Archaeological
Museum.
- Collinas
Visitors must not miss the former Monte Granatico building, which
was recently restored to its past glory, and which today hosts the
Ethnographic Museum.
- Sardara
A trip to the splendid museum and the Sacred Well of S.Anastasia is
a must.
- Sanluri
Visitors should not miss the Medieval castle of Eleonora D'Arborea.
- Villanovafranca
The area around the town offers numerous fascinating Nuraghi, among
which the Nuragic complex of "Su
Mulinu".
- Barumini
The town is famous throughout the world because of the remarkable
Nuragic settlement of "Su Nuraxi",
the most important testimony to Sardinia's Megalithic history.
- Gesturi
This town owes its fame to the splendid Giara
plateau, where visitors can see the characteristic wild ponies. It
is the only place in Europe where they live and breed free.
- Lunamatrona
This town is rich in Nuragic architecture. In fact, the area boasts
five Nuragic complexes, eleven single-towered Nuraghe, a Giants' Tomb
and a Sacred Well.
