Villa di Tigellio
Villa di Tigellio, attributed to Ermogene, a Sardinian poet
who the great Roman poets Orazio and Cicerone both mention, is really
an ancient residential complex which is part of the Roman city of Karalis
(II - III century A.D).
Today, visitors can still see the remains of the three sumptuous residences,
characterised by four columns standing at the corners of a central bath
(impluvium). The first house (domus) is known as "The House of
the painted foyer" and there is still evidence of its beautiful
mosaic floor.
The second house is called "The House of the statues", because
of the remains of the decorative statues in stucco found there, whilst
the third house has been almost completely destroyed.
Although the Villa di Tigellio complex is in ruins, it remains a remarkable
example of private residences in the Roman Era.
