The Nuragic village of "Su Nuraxi"-
Barumini
The Nuragic village
of Nuraxi lies about 1 Km from Barumini
and is one of Sardinia's most famous monuments.
The keep, or central tower, is protected by the surrounding, quatre-foiled
bastions, with a courtyard and well in the centre.
The entire structure is then encircled by the imposing defence
walls with their five towers. Outside the walls, 50 huts spread
out to form the village. Among these primitive dwellings there
is also that of the chief, as well as designated areas linked
to specific domestic and sacred activities.
Visitors can still easily identify ovens, wells and open hearths
for fires, all of which are evidence of a complex social system.
The settlement was inhabited from the end of the XV century B.C.
up until the Roman Era and had an important strategic and defensive
role to play.
