Museum Of Sardinian Agricultural And Alimentary Traditions
Address:
Via Roma no°2 - SIDDI
Tel. + 39 O7O 9341O28 Fax. + 39 O7O 9341247
The
"Museum of Sardinian agricultural and alimentary Traditions"
in Siddi exhibits traditional techniques of food production and consumption.
The museum is situated in the Steri house, which, for at least three
centuries has belonged to a family of lawyers from the village. All
the exhibits come from the Steri house which is set out to show how
the locals used to live, with rooms for food production and stables
outside for the working animals.
It is evident how the family business was organised at that time and
its social role in the community.
The museum not only shows the alimentary traditions of the Siddi community
and the history of local producers, but also documents more generally
the Sardinian way of producing and consuming food.
Olive press and Dairy
In
the past the olive press and dairy occupied the same space as the production
of oil and cheese as they were done at different times of the year.
Here the processes of oil and cheese production are explained.
The Mill
The mill for the grain, like the olive press, was driven by horse. The
technical description of the mill is particularly interesting as in
Sardinia it was never documented very well compared to other types of
machinery.
The Kitchen
The
kitchen is maybe one of the most interesting rooms with its original
tables, vent hole in the ceiling, "sa forredda" for roasting
meat, the large carbon stoves, niches in the walls for water pitchers,
gas lamps and the old electric lights.
You can also see recipes written by people from Siddi which document
types of food eaten daily, on holidays, and depending on the family's
social status.
Bakery
All the different types of utensils used in baking
are exhibited in the bakery. There is also a description
of the bread making process.
The accounts room
Here you can find book-rests and books on the history of food in Sardinia.
Pantry
The old pantry still has its old "smells".

Small and large Granary/Lodge and Stables
On the first floor of the small granary you can find information on
the history of the house and its recent restoration.
It will host the multimedia archive.
Agricultural equipment is exhibited in the large granary, along with
explanations on the production of grain and grapes.
