Museum of the Genoese Arch brotherhood
Address:
via F. Gemelli, 2 - Cagliari city
Tel. + 39 070 497855 (also fax)
The
museum adjoins the modern Saint George and Catherine church and holds
a collection of objects, architectural pieces, and sculptures, retrieved
from the old church which was destroyed in the bombing on the 13 May
1943.
The collection was acquired, over the centuries, by the brotherhood
in the Ligurian art markets. Most of these are from the 1600s, the "golden
age" of the arch brotherhood when the old church was constructed.
The exhibition occupies the ground and first floor. Amongst the sculptures,
those by Giuseppe Anfosso are of particular artistic value.
Also present is the beautiful painting "Christ and Mary offer Domenican
Saints a rosary" (1620 - 1630). There are also many examples of
holy silverware including a beautiful processional cross from the 1600s
with the Genoese jewellers trademark and an 18th century monstrance,
from Turin, decorated with precious stones.
The textiles section dates from the 17th to the first half the 19th
century and includes chasubles, stoles, dalmatics, surplices and chalice
veils in a variety of materials and colours.
On the first floor, texts and documents from the archives are displayed,
dating from the end of the 16th century to today. A small volume in
parchment is particularly important as it is a record of the constitution
of 1596 and moreover constitutes the first rules of the Sardinian arch
brotherhood written in Italian.
