The Crypt of S.Restituta

The Crypt of S.Restituta is situated in via S.Efisio, in the Stampace quarter.S.Restituta

It is a vast chamber which was used as a place of worship as far back as pre-historic times and which has revealed important testimony to the Punic, Roman, early Christian, Byzantine, late Medieval and Baroque periods.

The grotto is linked to the cult of S.Restituta, whose remains were uncovered in 1614. The simulacrum of the Saint is in marble and dates back to the VI century.

The only testimony to Byzantine art is what remains of a large fresco depicting S.Giovanni Battista.

During the Second World War the Crypt of S.Restituta was used as a bomb shelter.
