The Nuragic Fortress of "Su Mulinu"
Villanovafranca
The Nuragic Fortress of "Su Mulinu"
is about 300m. high, but stands almost hidden among the sandstone
and marble boulders which dominate the Marmilla plateau.
The fortress and surrounding settlement date back to the mid
second millennium BC. (XVI-XV century BC) up until the Medieval
period (VII-VIII century AD).

The fortress was built in limestone and sandstone blocks and has
a central structure and an external defence wall. However, its
development can be traced to three different historical phases:
- the first phase is the early middle Bronze Age (XVI-XV century
BC)
- the second phase is the middle Bronze Age (XIV century BC)
- the third phase is the more recent Bronze Age (XIII-XII century
BC)
The archaeological finds discovered at the site sit are exhibited
at the Archaeological Museum, which occupies the former "Monte
Granatico" building, a magnificent structure which dates
back to the mid nineteenth century and was recently restored to
its former glory.
