Monte Sirai - Carbonia

The oldest testimony to Monte Sirailife in the Monte Sirai district dates back to the Neolithic Age, the period in which the Domus de Janas (Fairy Houses) were dug out of the rocks.

The exact site where the dwellings stood in the Neolithic Age is unknown. Later, however, in the Nuragic period, a village grew up around the Sirai Nuraghe.

The settlement of Monte Sirai developed into a larger town with the arrival of the Phoenician, who occupied it in 750 B.C., and above all with the Carthaginians (in 520 B.C.), and evidence of this
historic past can still be seen today.

The NecropoliThe settlement is arranged in various distinct sections, each with its own fascinating itinerary for visitors:

  • The residential area.
This part of the town spreads over the south of the territory, with access is from the north gate. Visitors will notice the parallel streets which delimit the four rather extensive quarters, with their terraced houses.

  • The necropolis complex.
TophetBoth the Phoenician necropolis and the Punic necropolis lie to the north of the residential area. The necropolis complex consists of thirteen chamber tombs, dug out of the rock.

  • The Tophet.
The Tophet is perched on a hill to the north of the town. It was a burial place designed for babies who died of natural causes.
