Arbus

Population: 8,000
Altitude: 311 m. above sea level

Since the closure of the mines in the area, Arbus has focused its attention on the developing tourist sector. Among the many things to see here, we recommend the magnificent coastline, Costa Verde, and the Ingurtosu mines, which date back to the nineteenth century.
The local artisan knives are particularly interesting, the most famous of which is the knife with the curved blade.
Visitors can admire these artefacts in the "Museo del coltello sardo", a museum dedicated to knives, situated in the town centre.

Costa Verde

Along this marvellous coastline, to the south of Arbus, there are two extraordinary wonders of nature: the sand dunes of Piscinas, in the middle of Costa Verde, and the sand dunes of Pistis di Torre dei Corsari. Over the years the powerful force of the Mistral wind has swept enormous quantities of the fine, golden sand from the beach into sand dunes, some of which are more than 30 metres high.

Ingurtosu

Ingurtosu is an abandoned village, which sprang up in the nineteenth century around the lead and zinc mines.
The houses are situated on a steep hillside, covered in a dense pinewood. The splendid house where the Mine Director lived is worth a visit. It was modelled on the style of English castles and has beautiful wooden verandas.
Another fascinating stop along the road to Piscinas, is Lord Brassey's mineral washery plant, situated in a lunar landscape among Mediterranean shrub and the impressive mountain, formed from the waste material from the mines.

The Sardinian Knife Museum

The museum is in a splendid ancient building, which has been completely restored to its former glory, and boasts a collection of the most varied Sardinian knives produced on the island.
The museum is divided into four exhibition rooms:

  • The first room is reserved for the ancient knives produced up until the sixteenth century;
  • The exhibits in the second room are a collection of the knives produced by the best contemporary craftsmen in Sardinia;
  • The third room is home to a selection of the finest knives from the "coltelleria arburense", or local cutlery works;
  • The fourth room is an exquisite reconstruction of an ancient workshop where visitors can admire various instruments, such as bellows, a flywheel drill, a pedal wheel and an ancient anvil.
