Guspini
Population: 15,000
Surface area: 174.74 sq. km
Altitude: 137 m. above sea level
Guspini is a large town situated in a mining area, just north of the
town of Iglesias.
The ancient history of the original settlement of Guspini is unveiled
in the archaeological finds recovered there, which date back to prehistoric
times, the Nuragic period and the Punic era.
Besides the fascinating archaeological finds, visitors should not miss
the church of San Nicola di Mira, in late Gothic style, which dates
back to the fifteenth century.
The local handicraft is also of great interest, especially the production
of knives. Collectors come from all over the world to see these local
artefacts, in particular the "guspinese" knife, typical of
the region. Furthermore, every two years, between the end of July and
the first week in August there is a special exhibition dedicated to
the "Arresojas" knives.
Visitors to the area should take a trip to the hamlet of Montevecchio,
which lies in the centre of a mining complex, once one of the most productive
in Europe.
The mines are now in disuse, but visitors can admire the splendid Management
Building, which was recently turned into a museum, as well as the abandoned
mines.
We also recommend a visit to the Honey Festival, which is held every
year at the end of August.
