Portoscuso
Population: 6000
Altitude: 13 m. above sea level
Portoscuso was originally a
fishing village which grew up in the mid sixteenth century.
The most diffuse type of fishing practised in the area was for tuna
fish and coral.
Although Portoscuso could be found marked on maps as early as 1600,
the first inhabited centres only really began to develop slightly later
in the XVI century around the tuna fish processing factory of "Su
Pranu", which stands near a Spanish tower from 1500.
The buildings and work areas reserved for the processing of the tuna
fish and the fishermen's houses are located in Piazza S. Maria D'Itria.
Not far from the tuna fish factory visitors can admire the parish church
dedicated to the Madonna d'Itria, the
patron saint of Portoscuso.
Strolling along the Colombo promenade, visitors come to the picturesque
tourist harbour, which has a capacity for
up to 400 boats.
To the north of Portoscuso there is a luxuriant pinewood and the splendid
beach of Porto Paleddu. Instead, to the south, the road leads to Portovesme,
a busy industrial town, from where visitors can get the ferry to the
Island of S.Pietro.
