The Island of S.Antioco
Population: 13,000
Surface area: 108.9 sq. km
Altitude: 10 m. above sea level
The island of S.Antioco is part of the archipelago
of the Sulcis district and is joined to the mainland by an artificial
isthmus, approx. 3 km. long. There are two towns on the island, S.Antioco
and Calasetta.
S.Antioco is the biggest of the two towns and is situated on the site
of one of the oldest Phoenician settlements in Sardinia (VIII century
B.C.), which later became the Roman settlement of Sulci.
There are many other important traces of history on the island, such
as the Domus de Janas (Fairy houses), Tombe
dei Giganti (Giants' tombs) and numerous Nuraghi.
The Roman fountain in the centre of the town is particularly fascinating,
as are the early Christian catacombs, hidden in the late Gothic style
basilica of Sant'Antonio Martire. The island also boasts a coastline
of exceptional beauty with fine, sandy beaches, rugged, rocky headlands
and emerald seas.
Visitors must not miss the Archaeological Antiquarian Museum, with its
vast exhibition of archaeological finds, prevalently from Phoenician
- Punic times, but which also boasts a significant collection from the
Roman era. Furthermore, visitors are given an insight into the local
handicraft and trading activity of Sulci during the Phoenician - Punic
era.
