Villaperuccio
Population: 1,128
Surface area: 36.3 sq. km.
Altitude: 41 m. above sea level
Villaperuccio lies in a valley which has been inhabited by man since
the III millennium B.C.. Testimony to its ancient history can be found
in the numerous isolated or aligned Menhirs (15 - 20 in total) which
are scattered throughout the area, including the largest Menhir in Sardinia.
However, the most important testimony left by these ancient civilisations
is the impressive Montessu necropolis. It stands on a plateau about
200 m high and stretches over an area of approx. 2 sq. km with more
than 40 tombs.
Visitors to the area should not miss the sagra della tosatura, an annual
event held at the beginning of the summer. It is a fascinating agricultural-pastoral
festival where visitors can witness sheep shearing and admire the expertise
of the local sheep-farmers, before sampling the delicious specialities
of the area at a traditional rustic lunch. This gourmet experience consists
of stewed and roast lamb, served on elegant china plates and accompanied
by the fine wines of the Santadi wine cellar.
