Stintino
Population: 1,600
Altitude: 9m. above sea level
The town of Stintino is situated on the farthest tip of the coastline around the
Gulf of Asinara, 50 km north west of Sassari.
The town lies between an inlet, which has been transformed into a harbour,
and a narrow fjord, where a small, sheltered tourist harbour has been created.
Stintino was founded in 1885, designed to accommodate the fishermen
who had been ordered by the Government to leave the
island of Asinara, to make way for a penal colony. In the last few
decades Stintino has developed rapidly into a popular tourist resort, offering
all the
essential facilities, as well as the splendid fine, white, sandy beaches of Le
Saline and La Pelosa. The former
gets its name from the nearby salt lakes (Saline) and both beaches boast fascinating
Spanish towers, named after the beaches themselves, "Torre delle Saline"
and "Torre della Pelosa". The lagoon of Casaraccio lies just
a short distance from the salt lakes and stretches over an area of about 100 hectares.
It is surrounded by high ground covered in Mediterranean scrub, lentisk and oleander
trees, as well as varieties of palms, and supports a splendid selection of bird
life, such as flamingos, egrets, herons and cormorants.
