Villanova Monteleone
Population:
3000 The
town of Villanova Monteleone is situated between Alghero and Bosa, on the north-west
coast of the island. The surrounding countryside offers numerous medieval settlements
dating back to the Aragonese period. Visitors should not miss the fascinating
historical town centre, the Aragonese Tower of Badde Jana and the enchanting inlet
of Poglina.
One of Villanova's most picturesque beaches lies in a small
inlet known as "Torre Abbandonata", noted for the stalactites and stalagmites
which have formed from the bluish chert present there. The high cliffs of the
coast rise up for 500 metres and, during the rainy seasons, are dotted with streams
which flow down the steep cliff-side and form a beautiful waterfall at "S'Istrampu
de su Segnore". The countryside around Villanova boasts numerous archaeological
sites of great interest. There
are also many fascinating monuments to visit in the town centre: - The
church of San Leonardo da Limoges
The original structure dates back
to the sixteenth century and was later restructured in 1789. Inside the church
there is a single nave and side chapels where there are two magnificent wooden
altars from the eighteenth century. - The
Oratory of Santa Croce
the Oratory has a single nave and side chapels
with numerous statues, there is also a valuable wooden altar and a large crucifix
at the centre of the main altar. - The
church of the Madonna del Rosario
the church has a broad central nave
covered by a barrel vault and spacious side chapels. Inside the church visitors
can admire a beautiful wooden altar and other splendid, wooden statues. Visitors
to Villanova must not forget the splendid Anglo-Arab-Sardinia horses which are
bred here and make up 20% of the regional production.
