The Sardinian Parade - Sassari
The penultimate Sunday in May is an important date in Sassari
for Sardinian folklore. Every year on this day "La Cavalcata Sarda",
or the Sardinian Parade, takes place. It is a splendid display of local
Sardinian costumes from the whole island and gives visitors an insight
into the particular traditions of the islanders.
The festival unites about three thousand people who form a procession,
some on foot, others on horseback, which parades through the streets
of the city in traditional dress.
The extraordinary, ancient costumes are magnificent examples of Sardinian
handiwork, with a rich variety of designs, fabrics and jewels. However,
the festival is also famous for the spectacular exhibition of horsemanship
and includes impressive displays and races: pariglie, parezzas and ardia.
In the evening and into the night the town centre is animated with dancing,
singing and music contests between the various groups representing the
surrounding towns. The festival is a unique chance for visitors to admire
the traditions and costumes of the whole of Sardinia on one single occasion.
