The Anghelu Ruju Necropoli
The pre-Nuragic Necropolis complex is situated
10 km from Alghero, on
the road which
leads to Porto Torres.
It is one of the largest necropolises in Sardinia and is one of most
important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. The necropolis
dates back to the late Neolithic period (3000 A.C.) and was used as
the burial place for the local peoples, who lived from fishing and agriculture.
The different types of tombs discovered in the Necropolis bear witness
to the architectural evolution which occurred during the various phases
of its use. Features, such as the different entrances to the tombs and
the shapes of the inner chambers, either straight or round, are testimony
to these different historic periods.
The walls of some of the tombs are decorated with paintings of doors,
columns, cupels and bulls' horns, to represent the god Taurus, the guardian
of the dead. Numerous archaeological finds of great value have been
uncovered at the necropolis, including small, female idols.
