Lake Baratz
Lake
Baratz is the only natural lake in Sardinia and is situated near Porto
Ferro, to the north of Alghero.
It covers a surface area of about 60 hectares and is of great naturalistic
importance because of the variety of flora and fauna it supports.
Among the many animal species to admire here, visitors will see the
fresh water turtle (emys orbicularis), the bald coot (fulica atra) and
wild ducks (anas platyhynchos).
The lake is surrounded by a lush pine forest, which is rich in the typical
Mediterranean scrub, made up of strawberry bushes, cystus, rosemary,
myrtle and lavender plants, as well as numerous species of beautiful
wild orchids. Between the lake and Porto Ferro, visitors can admire
some of the largest sand dunes in Sardinia, which are almost completely
covered by a pinewood and the typical vegetation of this rare natural
phenomenon.
