Mines and Beaches
- Alghero, Mining Centre
and the beach of Argentiera
Just a few kilometres from Palmadula, visitors will come to the
wild, barren stretch of coastline known as Argentiera, which is particularly
striking because of its abandoned mining village. The area has a long
tradition of mining activity and the lead and zinc deposits were exploited
as far back as in Roman times, although they were closed definitively
around 1960. A splendid beach of grey sand is situated not far from
the mining village, in front of a deep blue sea, which abounds in
fish and exceptional lobsters. The beach offers a striking view of
the wooden skeleton of the old mineral washery and the entrances to
mine pits, immersed in the surrounding countryside. This stretch of
rocky coastline is also the perfect nesting habitat for the Corsican
gull.
