Arzachena Population: 9,020
Altitude: 83 m. above sea level Arzachena
lies in the north of Sardinia, 5 km from the coast of the deep gulf named after
it. The town stretches over the slopes of a hill and is framed by an impressive
backdrop of granite crests. In recent years the town has experienced a rapid
growth in tourism and the extensive housing development in the area bears witness
to this. The coastal district, in fact, embraces numerous tourist resorts, among
which the most famous is unquestionably Costa
Smeralda. The surrounding countryside is also very interesting because
it boast a number of fascinating prehistoric monuments.
The Necropolis of Li Muri. This is a typical example of a collective
burial ground in a 'circle", which characterises the prehistoric culture
of the Megalithic circles of Arzachena. - The
'Giants' Tomb' of Li Lolghi.
This
tomb is constituted by a long trench, delimited by a wall, built in dry stone
slabs. - The 'Giants' Tomb' of Coddu
'Echju.
This burial monument is characterised by a granite stele, or
stone, 4 m. high, which stands in
the centre of a semicircular archway, built in square stone blocks, driven into
the ground. - The Temple of Malchittu.
The structure is made up of an irregular atrium and a large chamber where visitors
can see the remains of a bench. An underground passage opens up in the floor to
the right of the entrance and was perhaps a drainage system for the sacred water
of the Temple.
- The Albucciu Nuraghe.
One of the
most interesting prehistoric monuments in the area. It is, in fact, what is known
as a "corridor" typology and extends horizontally over the area.
