Berchidda

Population: 3,500
Altitude: 300 m. above sea level

Berchidda is a large agricultural town, situated at the foot of the southern slope of Monte Limbara, in a panoramic position. The town's economy is based on the exploitation of local resources (vine cultivation, pastoral activity, the production of cheese, wine, typical desserts, cork, sausage and various pork meats and small industrial initiatives).

Many of the quarters in the historic centre have the characteristic charm of a mountain town, with a view of the Rio Mannu Valley. To the west of the town a road leads to the foot of the hill on which the Monte Acuto Castle once stood. The castle dates back to Medieval Times and was an important stronghold, although today only a few ruins remain. Visitors can also enjoy an interesting trip to the National woodland areas of Limbara. The artificial lake of Coghinas, surrounded by forests lies a little further on towards the south.

Among the things to see:

  • The Dolmen of Monte Acuto.
The dolmen, discovered only recently, dates back to the Neo-Aeneolithic Age and is one of the largest in the area.

  • The Dolmen of Abialzos.
    S. Caterina and S. Andrea. The dolmens are situated near the country churches of S. Caterina and S. Andrea, in the district of Abialzos. Both date back to around 2500 B-C.

  • The Wine Museum.
The region boasts an ancient tradition of vine cultivation and the 'Museo del Vino di Berchidda' offers visitors an insight into this important local activity. The museum covers 1,400 sq. m. and hosts a rich collection of products from the Sardinian vine cultivation sector. The structure has a refreshment area, bar, shop, conference room and numerous telecommunication services. The open-air vine laboratory is particularly interesting, where visitors can admire the rows of young plants destined for the vineyards.

  • Festival Time in Jazz.
This musical event was started by the famous jazz musician Paolo Fresu in 1988. Today it is one of the most prestigious and well-known musical events in Italy and also boasts considerable international recognition. It stands out from other music festivals because of its creativity and organisation, and, above all, because it provides a stage for original musicians, trends and events.
