Calangianus Population: approx. 4,635
Altitude: 518 m. above sea level
The town is situated in a panoramic position on the northern slopes of the Monte
Limbara mountain range, in the north-eastern corner of Sardinia. This old
town is fairly large and its economy is based on the ancient tradition of cork
production. Today it boasts numerous artisan businesses and industrial activities,
which, together, are responsible for 90% of the country's cork production.
It also hosts the Professional Institute for the Cork Industry, the only one of
its kind in Italy. The parish church of Santa Giusta stands in the
oldest part of the town. It dates back to the seventeenth century, although a
large part of it has since been rebuilt, and conserves an 'Assunzione', a rare
piece of art work by the Sardinian painter Andrea Lusso, depicting the Assumption.
The church of S. Maria degli Angeli is also fascinating. It was part
of a convent, which dates back to the seventeenth century, and the remains of
the cloister and its well can still be seen. The Agnu Nuraghe, built in small
granite blocks, stands at Monte di Deu, to the south west of the town, while in
the same area, near the Badamela River there is a 'Giants' Tomb'.
