San Teodoro Population: 2,507
Altitude: 15 m. above sea level The
town is the favourite destination of tens of thousands of tourists. Every year
visitors return for the exceptional beauty of the area and its warm, hospitable
people. The town is well organised and has become an important tourist resort
in the area, equipped with all the necessary services to make it an ideal holiday
destination. Although San Teodoro actually falls into the administrative
jurisdiction of the Province of Nuoro, its culture, traditions and dialect are
characteristic of the Gallura region. Not far from the town lies a vast lagoon,
which is one of the most interesting water environments on the east coast of
Sardinia. It abounds in fish because it is, in fact, connected to the sea
and spreads over a surface area of 230 hectares. The lagoon is surrounded
by lush Mediterranean scrub and supports a rich variety of bird life: from bald
coots to puffins, from red herons to wild ducks, with their colourful spring plumage.
The area which stretches along the granite promontory between the lagoon
of San Teodoro and Capo Ceraso is another spectacular natural oasis and faces
the impressive rock masses of the islands of Molara and Tavolara. The
coastline is a series of natural wonders with charming inlets, small islands,
secluded bays and rocks immersed in the limpid water. However, the underwater
landscape is no less fascinating with a rich variety of flora and fauna. The Peninsular
of Capo Coda Cavallo is made up of a vast expanse of gentle, lush green hills,
covered in pines and Mediterranean scrub. This fertile land extends for several
kilometres right up to the farthest point, known as Coda di Lu Furru, where there
is a marvellous beach.
