Besides Costa Smeralda
- Olbia
- Porto S. Paolo
The town is the departure point for the Islands of Tavolara and Molara.
It was built during the war around an old military wharf, constructed
specifically to connect Tavolara with the main land. The coastline
around Porto S. Paolo boasts a rare beauty and it is characterised
by small bays interrupted by low-lying rocky headlands of pink granite.
- The Island of Tavolara
This island is an immense limestone
table, which rises up out of the water like an imposing bastion. It
is trapezoid in shape and stands at an average height of 550 m., 6
km. long and 1 km. wide. On the far-western point of the island there
is a small collection of houses and a tiny harbour. The island boasts
an unspoilt natural environment thanks to the creation of a protected
area in 1997, which stretches as far as Capo Coda Cavallo. The conservation
policy means that today Tavolara supports a rich variety of bird-life
and keen nature lovers can admire such species as petrels and the
peregrine falcon, as well as rare examples of plant life.
- Capo Coda Cavallo
This beautiful corner of the region is characterised by its
limpid water and the extraordinary panoramas. However, the most striking
views are unquestionably those of the nearby island of Proratora,
as well as the views of the islands of Tavolara and Molara.
- San Teodoro
The town has a resident population of about 3,500 people, but during
the summer this number swells to more than 100,000. San Teodoro is
a popular destination among tourists because of its enchanting countryside
and unspoilt natural environment. The surrounding area also boasts
marshlands and lagoons, which provide the ideal habitat for the wonderful
pink flamingos on their migratory flight.
