Gallura and its mountains
- Tempio Pausania
- The Park of Limbara
The landscape of Monte Limbara is almost a miniature reproduction
of the natural elements to be found throughout the whole Gallura region,
with enormous granite masses, rising out of lush vegetation to form
imposing cascades of rocks or lonely peaks. The breathtaking panorama
varies according to the altitude. The cork trees and holm oaks which
cover the lower part of the mountain slopes gradually give way to
rich Mediterranean scrub further up. Monte Limbara abounds in rivers
and springs, among which the most well-known are Fonte Smeraldina
(Funtana Di Li Frati), Fonte Silva and "Funtana di Fundu Du Monti".
Monte Limbara also supports a rich variety of flora, including the
Rotulea Limbarae, the Thesium Italicum and the Ribes Sandaliotum.
It abounds in cork trees, holm oak, lentisk and cistus trees, as well
as myrtle, strawberry and juniper bushes. There are also interesting
varieties of heather, yew and holly trees. However, it is an important
area for some species of reptiles, which are unique to Monte Limbara,
such as the Sardinain Armeno. Many of the animal species which once
inhabited the area have now disappeared, such as the eagle, the kestrel,
the griffin, fallow deer and the common deer. However, visitors can
still catch sight of wild boar, weasels, wild cats, hares and numerous
other species.
