Cala Luna
The well-known bay of Cala Luna lies not far to the south of Cala Gonone,
surrounded by the
splendid cliffs of the Golfo di Orosei.
It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of the Mediterranean,
with its 700 metre-shoreline of fine, white sand and a transparent emerald
sea with its magnificent reflections.
On the southern end of the beach there is a fresh water lake, which
was once populated with fish. However, since 1980 the oleander wood,
with some trees reaching up over 6 m., has spread over the area.
The valley of Codula di Luna lies inland and
it is one of the wildest environments on the island,
still
totally unspoilt. The northern part of the beach is overlooked by tall,
limestone cliffs.
The impressive rock faces are interrupted by the seven enormous
cave entrances, leading to grottoes that have been created over the
millennia by the movement of the sea.
Not far from away, visitors will find the
'Grotta del Bue Marino', once
home to the last few examples of the now rare Monk Seal.
