The region of
Nuoro abounds in historic monuments and important archaeological sites,
making it a genuine open-air museum. The most diffuse monuments date back
to prehistoric times and bear witness to the area's ancient past, such
as the Nuraghi, the giants' tombs, the 'domus de janas' (fairy houses),
sacred wells, dolmens, Nuragic villages and menhirs.
The Nuraghi have come to be considered the symbol of Sardinia. The construction
and architectural techniques, as well as the level of perfection of the
structures make them unique examples of this civilisation, unparalleled
in the whole Mediterranean basin.
