Bortigali

Population:1,780
Altitude: 510 m. above sea level

The ancient town of Bortigali is situated in the mountainous area of Marghine and stretches out at the foot of the Campeda plateau in central-western Sardinia. It lies in a natural setting of exceptional beauty and is just 30 km from Bosa and 60 km from Alghero.

The surrounding countryside is rich in archaeological testimony to the area's historical past, including "domus de Janas" (Fairy Houses), dolmen, Nuraghi and Necropolises. Visitors should also not miss the Tamoli stones at Monte S. Antonio, the Ruju Nuraghe and the Necropolis of Filigosa, which stands on the underlying rocky ridge and dates back to the last phase of the Neolithic period.
The large Nuraghe of Santa Barbara, with its high central tower and a bastion with four
towers, is also visible from the 131 Carlo Felice highway.

The town's historical centre boasts well preserved examples of the traditional local country architecture, enriched with finely sculptured doorways and architraves. These magnificent buildings and churches make up a backdrop of rare beauty.
Bortigali is just a few kilometres from the north-west coast of Sardinia and is therefore a paradise for visitors who love water-sports, such as surfing and sailing. However, it also offers numerous excursions of all kinds, as well as trekking, mountain-bike routes, hang-gliding and pony trekking all in an extraordinary natural environment.

The town is noted for its local gastronomic specialities, especially its vast range of cheeses, among which "pecorino" (sheep's cheese), and numerous other dairy products the area is famous for.
