Orgosolo Population: 4,904 Altitude:
620 m. above sea level This mainly pastoral town is unfortunately more famed
for its legendary bandits than for the numerous other things it has to offer.
Besides pastoral activity, today the economy is based on tourism and the visitors
who come the area for the many, varied excursions it offers, such as to the nearby
mountains and the famous 'Supramonte', or highland. Although the town has undergone
certain development in recent years, it is still characterised by its steep, narrow
streets and rustic, stone houses. The
Murales which decorate the town are particularly interesting since they bear
witness to the political and social problems of the area. Besides the old parish
church of S. Pietro, visitors can admire the Oratory of S. Croce (XVI century),
the churches of S. Antonio Abate (XV century), S. Antonio of Padua (XVI century),
S. Nicola and, particularly important to the people of Orgosolo, the church of
'L'Assunta'. Things to see: - The
Supramonte
This vast highland, made up of mountain crests and deep
valleys, secular woods and barren lands, is one of the most striking and unspoilt
environments in Sardinia. The holm oak woods and dense Mediterranean scrub offer
refuge to a rich, rare fauna. The mountain peaks are the perfect habitat for eagles,
griffin, goshawks and raven, while the slopes are home to moufflon and wild boar.
- The Forest of Montes
The forest stretches for more than 4,500 hectares, over a partly granite, partly
limestone territory. It abounds in holm oak, juniper and strawberry bushes, heather
and ferns, and is the perfect habitat for numerous birds of prey and wild animals.
It is also the pasture for herds of sheep and goats, as well as pigs, living wild
on the slopes. - Monte Novo S.
Giovanni
This mountain lies within the area embraced by the Forest
of Montes and stands at a height of 1,316 m.. It offers a number of fascinating
excursions and magnificent panoramas of the surrounding territory. An imposing,
limestone tower rises up from the top of the mountain, from which visitors are
rewarded with a breathtaking view that sweeps across a large part of central Sardinia.
