The world of Grazia Deledda

  • Nuoro

  • Galtellì
Strolling through the narrow streets of the town, visitors can admire the typical, perfectly-preserved country houses. There are numerous churches to see, in particular the pre-Romanesque church of S. Pietro and the Medieval church of Santissimo Crocefisso, the simulacrum of which is believed to have miraculous powers. Visitors must not miss the Ethnographic Museum which occupies a splendid period house. Monte Tuttavista, which dominates the town, is well worth a visit because it offers a magnificent panorama, as well as the chance to see the castle of Pontes and Punta Fraicata.

  • Orosei
The sea, the sandy shores and the mouth of the River Cedrino have meant that this corner of Sardinia has been an important trading centre for thousands of years. The area boasts fascinating testimony to this ancient history with evidence from the Nuragic, Roman, Byzantine and 'Giudicial' eras. Orosei is also known as the town of the churches.

    - The church of S. Antonio Abate. The exterior is typical of the country sanctuaries in Sardinia. Inside, on the main altar, there is a wooden statue of the Saint, which dates back to 1400 A.D., whilst in the courtyard visitors can admire the tower of S. Antonio, from the Pisan period.

    - The church of S. Maria e' Mare. This church stands at the mouth of the River Cedrino and was built by Pisan merchants in the XIII century, although it has undergone various modifications since then. On the last Sunday in May there is a fascinating folk regatta and a procession of boats sail down the stretch of the River Cedrino between the bridge and the church.

    - The Sanctuary of the 'Madonna del Rimedio'. The Sanctuary stands on the outskirts of the town and is one of the most important in Sardinia, as well as being the final destination of the pilgrimage performed by the people of the Baronia district. Inside the sanctuary visitors can admire numerous votive offerings made from wax, which depict miraculous healings attributed to the Madonna del Rimedio.

    Things to see:
    - The Sa Curcurica Lagoon. Just to the north of Cala Liberotto visitors will come across the Sa Curcurica Lagoon, a fascinating natural oasis set in a striking landscape. It is immersed in the greenery of the pinewood and stretches over a surface area of 38 hectares. It receives a modest flow of fresh water and is characterised by the dense marshland vegetation.
