The Sacred Well of Santa Cristina and the
Losa Nuraghe
The Sacred Well of Santa Cristina is situated
on the Abbasanta plateau, immediately after the town of Paulilatino,
and can be easily reached from the SS 131 road.
The
entire geographical area is rich in monuments and archaeological remains.
The Nuraghic village is particularly interesting and contains the Sacred
Well of Santa Cristina. It is one of about forty present in the island,
but it is the most important because of its excellent state of preservation
and aesthetic design.
The well dates back to the Bronze Age (XI-X century B.C.) and still
contains water today. It was built in stone bricks, which were skilfully
cut and assembled into a conic-trunk shape.
This
type of temple-well design is characterised by a water source, covered
by an underground chamber, similar to an underground Nuraghe, at the
bottom of which lies the well. Access to the well is from a stone staircase,
in front of which there is a rectangular area, presumably used as a
place of worship.
Further along the SS 131 road, about 3 km south of Abbasanta, visitors
should not miss the Losa Nuraghe, one of the
most representative archaeological remains on the island.
It is a trilobate structure, in basalt stone, with an impressive surrounding
wall, which still boasts three towers.
The remains of the Nuraghic village and constructions from the Punic
and Roman periods lie between the outer wall and the ramparts. There
are three large semicircular niches in the wall of the central tower,
which was originally paved, and its tholos is still intact. Stone steps
lead up to the second floor, where there was another tholos, now, however,
partly destroyed, while the hut which was used for gatherings is situated
in front of the entrance.
