Cuglieri Population: 3,600 Cuglieri
is situated on a hill and its surrounding territory stretches from the highest
peaks of the Montiferru, as far as the sea and the villages of Santa
Caterina di Pittinurri, S'Archittu,
with the splendid natural archway carved into the rock by the sea, and Torre del
Pozzo, which gets its name from the Spanish tower. The first human settlement
at Cuglieri dates back to prehistoric times. Testimony to this ancient history
can be seen in the Domus de Janas, the Nuraghi which are concentrated the area
known as "Sessa". The archaeological area of Cornus is particularly
interesting and noted for the historic figures of Amsicora and his son Ariosto,
who led the uprising against the Romans in the second Punic war in 215 B.C..
The parish church of S.Maria della Neve stands in the centre of the town.
It was built at the end of the seventeenth century and inside visitors can admire
a stone statue of the Virgin Mary from the fifteenth century. Among the
things to see:
- A secular olive tree
with a trunk circumference of 9.30m.;
- Cornus
the ancient Punic-Roman town, where
visitors can still admire the external boundary wall, the foundations of a number
of buildings in square limestone blocks, the remains of a Roman aqueduct and some
of the structures in the harbour area; -
The early Christian town of Columbaris
founded between the VI and the
IX century, site of a monastic and episcopal community; -
The church of S.Maria delle Grazie
where,
among other things, visitors can admire a medieval statue of Mary and the Baby
Jesus, made in ivory and adorned in jewels donated by the faithful.
