Fordongianus
Population:
1,256 This
agricultural town, also known for its thermal springs, is situated at the mouth
of the Tirso valley, along the road which, in ancient times, led from Karalis
to Olbia. It stands on the remains of the ancient "Forum Traiani", from
which it gets its name. The territory abounds in testimony to this ancient
history, with relics from pre-historic, Phoenician, Punic and Roman times. From
this latter period visitors can still admire the impressive ruins of an aqueduct,
an amphitheatre and the remains of the old baths on the left bank of the River
Tirso. Besides
the thermal baths, visitors should not miss the parish church of S.Pietro from
the XVI century and the Aragonese House. The latter is a fine example of dwellings
from the seventeenth century, in red trachyte, which the area abounds in, with
elegant cornices, exquisitely decorated and carved. The small, country
church of S.Lussorio lies just a few kilometres from the town, built around 1100
A.D. by the Vittorini monks. There is also a Nuragic complex not far from
the town of Fordongianus, where the remains of an ancient castle (Casteddu
Becciu) can still be seen.
