Paulilatino Population:
2,795
Paulilatino is an agricultural-pastoral town, situated on a basaltic
plateau, surrounded by woods of cork-oaks and olive trees. It gets its name from
a marsh area not far from the town (paludis a latere), which was reclaimed in
1827. In the centre of the town, visitors can admire the characteristic houses
built in dark basaltic stone, without plaster; some still conserve the stepping
stone beside the front door, known as "sas muredas", used to mount a
horse, and the iron rings where the animals were tethered. The territory
is rich in remains which bear testimony to its ancient past, with ruins from pre-historic
and Roman times. Visitors should not miss the
Nuragic site of Santa Cristina, the two "Giants' Tombs" at Goronna,
and the remains of numerous (about a hundred) Nuraghi, among which: "Lugherras",
"Oschina", "Atzara", "Batitzone" and "Nussiu".
Furthermore, the Carthaginians built a temple here which is believed to be dedicated
to Demetra and Kore. The parish church of S.Isidoro, in Gothic-Aragonese style,
and the nearby churches of S.Maria Maddalena and Madonna D'Itria are also well
worth a visit.
