Santulussurgiu Population: 2,989 The
town stands on the eastern slope of Montiferru, arranged in a semicircle around
the edge of the crater of a volcano. It is immersed in an area rich in woods and
streams. Santulussurgiu is situated just a few kilometres from the splendid
Oristano coastline. Testimony to the area's ancient roots can be seen in
the numerous prehistoric remians to be found there, such as the Domus de Janas,
Dolmen and Nuraghi. Among the Nuraghi to admire we recommend: Banzos, Mura Lauros
de Suba and Zuanna Maddu. The church of S.Maria degli Angeli rises up in
a panoramic position. It dates back to the VI century and boasts a beautiful carved
wooden altar. Among the other churches to see there is the small church of S.Croce
dating back to the seventeenth century, while the parish church of S.Pietro, in
neo-classical style, is from the nineteenth century. Among
the places to visit:
- the museum
dedicated to the area's agricultural history, which offers an insight into
the socio-economic traditions of the district.
- the traditional
stone houses, which are tall, narrow buildings with beautiful wrought iron
balconies.
- S.Leonardo, 684 m. above
sea level, 6 km. from the town. This is a desirable holiday destination, noted
for its seven springs of pure water with diuretic qualities and a beautiful park
of towering trees (elm, holm oak and chestnut trees).
- "Sa
Carrella 'e Nanti", a horse-race in traditional costume, which takes
place in the town, held during the carnival period.
Horses have always played
an important role in Santulussurgiu's economy. In the past the animals were
used as a means of transport and today the town still boasts a flourishing artisan
sector which produces tackle, mouth-bits, saddles and boots, all greatly appreciated
by a select international clientele.
