Is Arenas Beach

The beach of Is Arenas stretches for 6 km. along the Oristano
coast in the area of Narbolia and
San Vero Milis and, as the name suggests,
is characterised by the sand dunes which rise up behind it. This expanse
of dunes is the largest in Sardinia. Unfortunately, in the last decades this small
"desert", the only one of its kind in Europe, has been radically changed
due to an intense reforestation project (above all pine and acacia trees) and
today only a few stretches of bare sand dunes remain. Despite
these changes, the image of the vast beach, with this large forest providing
a splendid backdrop, is particularly striking. Further inland the panorama
is no less impressive, with the summits of Montiferru towering up in the distance
and the wooded mountain slopes, whilst towards the sea the rocky headland of Capo
Mannu marks the beginning of the Sinis Peninsular. The large beach, with its
fine, light grey sand and shallow, emerald water, is very peaceful, even in peak
season, thanks to the vastness of the coastline.
