On the Path of the Phoenicians
- Oristano
- Cabras
The town of Cabras is situated near the Cabras
lagoon, one of the largest lagoons in Europe and also one of the
most interesting because of the exceptional plant and animal life
it hosts. There are two protected areas in the Cabras district: Turre
Seu and Pauli'e Sali. The beaches are among the most beautiful in
the whole province of Oristano, but the most striking of all is perhaps
the S.Giovanni beach, where
the ancient city of Tharros stands.
There are many fascinating archaeological remains in the area, among
which the Hypogeum Sanctuary of S.Salvatore, from the VI century,
which is located in the village of S.Salvatore.
- S. Giovanni di Sinis
The Sinis Peninsular is characterised by its splendid sea. The underwater
landscape in fact offers impressive coral formations, basaltic rock
masses, large granite boulders, grottoes and gorges. The sandy seabed
is characterised by a rich variety of marine flora, while the uncontaminated
water is home to numerous species of fish-life.
The protected area is one of the most important marshlands in the
Mediterranean, with an incredible variety of fauna. The whole peninsular
is an oasis of exceptional beauty, surrounded by a crystalline sea
and overlooked by the striking S.Giovanni Tower, which dominates the
coastline. The backdrop of sand dunes and the S.Giovanni beach complete
this picture postcard not to be missed.
- Tharros
The Sinis Peninsular also boasts the ancient city of Tharros. It was
founded by the Phoenicians and represents one of the most important
archaeological sites in the whole of the Mediterranean.
