On the Path of nature and Archaeology
- Oristano
- Paulilatino
Paulilatino is an agricultural-pastoral town, situated on a basaltic
plateau, surrounded by woods of cork-oaks and olive trees. It gets
its name from a marsh area not far from the town (paludis a latere),
which was reclaimed in 1827. The territory is rich in historic remains
which bear testimony to its ancient past, with ruins from pre-historic
and Roman times. Visitors should not miss the Nuragic site of Santa
Cristina, with one of the most beautiful scared wells on the island,
and the remains of the "Lugherras" Nuraghe, immersed in
a secular wood.
- Abbasanta
Abbasanta is an agricultural-pastoral town, situated on the Abbasanta
plateau. In the oldest part of the town the houses are built in the
characteristic dark, basaltic stone, without plaster. The territory
abounds in archaeological testimony to its ancient past and visitors
should not miss the extraordinary
Losa Nuraghe, one of the island's most representative remains.
It stands near the turning off for Nuoro on the SS 131 road. This
trilobed Nuraghe, built in large, basaltic blocks, is surrounded by
an impressive turreted outer wall. The oldest tower leads up to the
raised floor from where there is a spectacular panorama which sweeps
from the Gennargentu plateau towards the mountain range of Marghine.
- Santulussurgiu
Santulussurgiu is the main town in the Montiferru district. It stands
in a deep basin, which was once the caldera of a volcano, now extinct.
The town boasts a fine tradition of artisan activities, many of which
are still practised today, such as weaving and carpentry. Visitors
can also admire the exquisite leather products, as well as iron instruments
for horses and the local production of typical knives. Among the many
other things to see there are the churches of S.Maria degli Angeli,
with its beautiful wooden altar and statue, S.Croce, the Neo-classical
parish church of S.Pietro and the 'Museo della Tecnologia Contadina',
a museum dedicated to the area's farming history. Just 6 km. from
the town there is also the marvellous village of S.Leonardo di Siete
Fuentes, rich in therapeutic springs and immersed in a magnificent,
fertile park of secular plants.
