Armungia
Population: approx. 600
Armungia
is situated on a hill which stands 365 m above sea level. It lies in
the central part of the Gerrei territory, an inland region of south-east
Sardinia, which is prevalently mountainous land.
The town is about 65 km. from Cagliari and 30km from the splendid beaches
of the Sarrabus region.
The town stands on a plateau and is a compact urban centre around a
conic-shaped Nuraghe. This impressive stone structure is well preserved
and is a characteristic land mark in the area, dominating the valley
below.
The picturesque town presents beautiful examples of traditional country
houses, built in schist stone. In the courtyards, which abound in roses
and lemon trees, many houses are still equipped with the traditional
wood oven with its characteristically shaped chimney, used for the production
of the local "pistoccu" bread and delicious desserts.
Visitors
will be struck by the silence of the woods and the fragrance of the
coutryside, which make up this charming, natural landscape.
There are numerous woods with towering trees in the "Murdega"
area, "Is Toris", "Miali" and "Is Forreddus".
The latter is a communal woodland area which covers 130 hectares and
is equipped with mountain bike paths, picnic areas and the necessary
services visitors may require to enjoy nature walks in this luxuriant
oasis. Among the many panoramic spots, we particularly recommend the
area of Ilixi Durci, from where visitors are rewarded with a splendid
view of the whole Flumendosa valley.
There are also a number of fascinating caves to explore, such as Su
"Pittiolu" and "Gospuru", where various fossils
have been uncovered dating back to about 400 million years ago.
This luxuriant environment is the ideal habitat for wild boar, hares,
rabbits, hedgehogs, partridges, quail and woodcocks, as well as for
birds of prey, such as golden eagles, goshawk and owls.
There are also a number of rare species such as the wild cat and the
marten.
Things to see:
- The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo
- The small Ethnographic Museum of "S'Omu
De Is Ainas" (The Tool House), which occupies the former
Town Hall. The museum hosts an exhibition of ancient tools for agricultural,
artisan and domestic use, as well as a collection of photographs belonging
to the town's most illustrious citizen, Emilio Lussu. Emilio Lussu
(1890 - 1975) was a valiant fighter, politician and great writer and
visitors can get an insight into his life by visiting the house where
he was born.
