The Mine of Baccu Locci - Villaputzu

The Mine of Baccu Locci The mine of Baccu Locci is situated along the
banks of the river of the same name,
towards the southern boundary of the
Salto di Quirra.

The dirt track which leads to the mine crosses over the river in a number of points with a series of cement platforms, which rest on the river bed and allow visitors to catch a glimpse of sights
of extreme beauty.

The washery where the minerals were rinsed lies about ten kilometres further on, but only the supporting structures remain.

The Mine of Baccu Locci Visitors can, however, admire other buildings,
probably used as administration offices,
storerooms and workshops.
The workshop contains machinery which was
used for the extraction of the minerals.

A difference in height of almost 200 metres separates the washery from the extraction sites and, once extracted, the minerals were transported to the rinsing area by a cable-way.

The Baccu Locci mine was used above all for the extraction of arsenopyrite.

The mine has, for some time now, been the object of a restoration-environmental project which is designed to give visitors an insight into the area's history and restore this corner of the district to its former beauty. Some of the buildings have already been renovated.
