San Vito
Population: approx. 4000
San
Vito is a large town situated among fertile vineyards at the beginning
of the coastal plain of the Sarrabus district.
In the high part of the town visitors must not miss the church of San
Lussorio, whose Medieval ruins were recently restored to their former
glory. Inside the church there are beautiful wooden corbels, exquisitely
carved and painted.
Near the town it is also possible to visit the abandoned Monte
Narba mine, once a rich silver deposit which was exhausted after
decades of exploitation. The presence of these mining ruins allows San
Vito to be included in the development project for the area, designed
at promoting local tourism.
An event not to be missed is the "Sagra delle Launeddas",
a festival held in San Vito in August, which celebrates the ancient
local wind instrument and which attracts thousands of tourists every
year.
