Silius
Population: approx. 1500
Altitude: 565 m. above sea level
The
town of Silius nestles in woods about 52 kilometres from Cagliari.
The Castle of Sassai o Orgoglioso is of particular interest. It was
built by the Pisans in the XIII century, seized by the "Giudicato"
or Govenorship of Arborea and then later fell under Aragonese dominion.
It is currently being restored, but visitors can still admire its keep
and the ruins of the defence walls. Recent excavation work has uncovered
an ancient water cistern and baking oven.
