Villaputzu
Population: approx. 5000
This
large agricultural town stands on the Flumendosa plain, just a few kilometres
from the sea.
Heading towards the coast, visitors come across the splendid beach
of Porto Corallo, where they can admire the ruins of the Gibas Castle,
a small fortification built during Spanish dominion, together with the
Torre (tower) di Porto Corallo.
An obligatory stop for visitors, to the north of Villaputzu, is the
beautiful, large beach of Quirra, also known as Murtas or Cala de S'Acqua
Durci.
Another place of interest is the Quirra Castle, which lies just a few
kilometres to the north of Villaputzu, in the so-called Salto di Quirra.
It was built for defensive purposes by the "Judges", or Governors,
of Cagliari in the XIII century, but unfortunately today only the ruins
remain.
From the Salto di Quirra plateau visitors can
reach the river Rio Baccu
Locci and the
extraordinary
Baccu Locci mine, now in disuse.
The beautiful church of San Nicola (XIII century) stands at the foot
of the Quirra Castle and is one of the few examples in Sardinia of late
Romanesque style in brickwork.
The structure, with one nave and a semicircular apse, is decorated with
Tuscan style pensile arches.
