Silius
The town of Silius is immersed in secular woods and is particularly
known for the magnificent castle of Sassai o Orgoglioso, built by
the Pisans in the XIII century.
Villaputzu - San
Vito
Further along the coast, at the mouth of the Flumendosa river, one
of the largest Sardinian waterways, the mountains make way for a coastal
plain which stretches from Villaputzu (with its beautiful beach at
the mouth of the Flumendosa river,
Porto Corallo, the new tourist harbour and the Quirra beach) to
San Vito (an interesting
trip to the abandoned silver mine of Monte
Narba, as far as Castiadas). The beaches in this area are large
expanses of fine sand and are still relatively quiet and unspoilt,
even in peak season. The only headland to interrupt this vast, single
shoreline is the rocky promontory of Capo Ferrato.
Muravera
Muravera is the largest town in the Sarrabus district and stands on
a lush plain, surrounded by citrus plantations.
The whole area boasts the highest average temperatures in Sardinia
all year round, as well as beaches of exceptional beauty, such as
the beach at the mouth of the Flumendosa River, the beaches of S.Giovanni,
Saline, Colostrai and
Torre Salinas. There
are also interesting archaeological sites to visit in the neighbourhood,
among which the Menhirs of Piscina Rei, the megalithic structures
of Monte Crobu - Cuili Piras and the Scalas Nuraghe.
The town is also noted for the local handicraft, in particular its
rugs and cloth, as well as the beautiful, elegant baskets made from
reeds, wicker and cane. The inhabitants of Muravera are also famous
for their ancient musical wind instrument, the Launeddas,
similar to bagpipes.
Costa Rey - Castiadas
The Costa Rey coastline covers about 8 km of golden sand. The entire
area abounds in beaches, coves and bays, and is characterised by a
splendid backdrop of Mediterranean shrub land and a crystal clear
sea.
Among the many beaches, we recommend:
- Cala Pira
A small beach nestling in Mediterranean shrub, framed by a backdrop
of rocks and cliffs. It is a beautiful stretch of fine, white sand
and crystalline water.
- Cala Sinzias
This beach gets its name from the Sardinian word for mosquito, once
very diffuse in the area as a result of the numerous lagoons. It is
a broad stretch of white sand in front of a clear, shallow sea, set
against a backdrop of Mediterranean shrub and pine trees.
- Peppino's Rock
Peppino's rock stands in the sea, about 20 metres from the shore and
can be reached on foot, by wading through the shallow water. From
the summit of the rock mass there is a magnificent panorama of the
surrounding environment.
- Porto Pirastu
Porto Pirastu is an area characterised by small beaches nestling between
rocky headlands. The shoreline is still unspoilt and framed by Mediterranean
shrub and a large pinewood.
Villasimius
In recent years the town and picturesque coastline, stretching as
far as the south eastern tip of Capo Carbonara, have seen a sharp
increase in tourist activity as more and more visitors discover the
treasures of this part of Sardinia. The area offers splendid landscapes,
marvellous beaches and the characteristic Mediterranean shrub land.
Visitors are particularly attracted to the fine, white sandy beaches,
the splendid transparent water and the unspoilt natural environment.
The Gulf of Capo Carbonara boasts the magnificent beaches of Porto
Sa Ruxi, Cala Piscareddus, Campus,
Campulongu and Spiaggia del
Riso.
Along the east coast from Villasimius there are other splendid beaches,
such as Porto Giunco,
Notteri and the beach of Simius,
Is Traias and Is Molentis.
The two islands, Isola dei Cavoli and Isola di Serpentara, are also
well worth a visit.
