Nature and Archaeology
- San Vito
- Villasalto
Villasalto is a large pastoral town situated on a plain which connects
the districts of Gerrei and Sarrabus. It was once a mining town, which
grew up around the biggest antimony deposit in Italy. The "Su
Suergiu" mine is now in disuse, but visitors can view the village
and washery where the minerals were rinsed and separated.
A particularly interesting trip is to the Genis mountains and the
"Arrubiu" necropolis, as well as to "Sa Grutta e' Scusi",
where it is still possible to see the Sardinian newt (Geotritone),
a species in danger of extinction.
- Silius
The town of Silius is immersed in secular woods and is particularly
known for the magnificent castle of Sassai o Orgoglioso, built by
the Pisans in the XIII century.
- Goni
Goni is a characteristic village with an economy almost entirely based
on pastoral activity. It stands isolated in the centre of this wild,
uninhabited mountain region and is overlooked by the striking Goni
Nuraghe.
Goni deserves special mention on any itinerary because of its extraordinary
"Pranu Mutteddu" megalithic
necropolis.
